If you are like most laptop owners, your laptop is one of your essential pieces of your “life equipment.” These items would include your cell phone, maybe a PDA, your automobile and such. Having the right accessories for these pieces of equipment can make their functionality and ease of use to greatly improve. Let’s discuss the available types of accessories available for your laptop that are essential.
If you are a business traveler these accessories can be even more crucial and indispensable.
I’m sure you’ve had moments when you couldn’t locate a file that you knew you had stored on your laptop. The feeling of panic can be terrible until you find it. Imagine your hard drive failing (it happens!). You would lose all your important files – pictures, videos, everything.
Therefore, first and most important is external storage. External storage can be something as simple as a thumb drive or a large external drive (at this writing up to 2 Terabyte systems are available from the major Hard Drive Manufacturers). The type of external storage you select will depend on your needs. If you just keep basic files (i.e. “Word” documents or spreadsheets, etc) then a thumb drive could be enough (and they are very inexpensive). If you plan on storing large files such as lots of photos and videos then you may need to step up in capacity with an external hard drive.
Thumb drives are available at almost any electronics or “tech” store and are as simple to use as plugging into your USB connection on the side or back of your laptop. External Hard Drives are available from Computer and Electronics stores.
A laptop carrying case is one of the Best Laptop accessories you can get if you are a frequent traveler. Try to purchase a laptop carrying bag that has plenty of compartments for all those notebook peripherals. Always check to see if your laptop or notebook will fit.
A word of caution that is actually a Safety and Security item you might want to consider the laptop cases that look more like a simple backpack. There are thieves in airports just looking for the cases that scream, I have a laptop inside me! . If your case looks less likely to contain a laptop the potential thief may pass you by for a more obvious take. In addition, these cases can actually hold much more then the more typical (flat) cases.
Many of us travel to places outside the US that may not have the same standards on the supply of power for your laptop. Because of this another essential item you should have in your laptop accessories is a travel size Surge Protector. These devices are not just for use during thunder storms! Faulty lines can zap your laptop anytime. So make sure to purchase one of these and take it with you for your next overseas trip.
One item that I have found invaluable is a wireless mouse. The main reason for this accessory is convenience and comfort. In any situation you can use this device in a comfortable position. The only issues I’ve encountered are with reflective or transparent (glass) surfaces. These optical mice can have difficulty working properly so you may need to also keep a mouse pad with you to ensure the mouse is always on an acceptable surface. And don’t forget to keep spare batteries (usually small AA or AAA).
With the right accessories, your laptop can become something that is not only more comfortable to work on for long periods of time, but you can also make it safer (from electrical spikes, etc) and well as more secure (with appropriate filters – spyware, virus protection, etc.).

How to Restore a Blackberry to Factory Defaults
Recently, I ran across an interesting problem. My boss was having issues with his brand new BlackBerry Curve. His Desktop or the Home Screen , as RIM likes to call it, was not displaying any applications whatsoever. He had called AT& T to get a push problem with his email fixed. They had him press a number of buttons, and when he restarted, all the application icons went away. This was a brand new BlackBerry, so the problem should not have existed in the first place.
At first, I thought it was just an issue with the OS, and that I would need to reload applications. I dutifully downloaded the latest firmware updates, and the newest version of BlackBerry’s desktop software. Then, I hooked up the Curve, removed, and then re added the applications. Nothing changed. It was at this point I realized that the phone needed to be reset to out of the box state. After a few searches on Google, it became blindingly obvious that the typical, very easy solution would not work for me.
Every single forum or post said that I just needed to enter the Options menu, select Security Options , then General Settings . Hit the Menu key, and then select Wipe Handheld . Depending on your model, you may have to type blackberry when prompted, to confirm the wipe. It would then reboot, all clean and shiny. I gleaned this info from http://www.greghughes.net/rant/ResetABlackberryToFactoryDefaults.aspx(sorry for the lack of a shortened link, this article site won’t allow me to form one with anchor text). There was just one problem with this method: I couldn’t get to the options menu through the desktop, and nowhere did I find a key based shortcut to this menu.
Now,I believe I’m on the hook for a full wipe. I searched to and fro, and finally stumbled across a command line interface for resetting the BlackBerry. It’s called Jl_Cmder. The simplicity is mind boggling, as it has 5 easy options to choose from: You’ve can check the basic device info or the eventlog, take a screenshot(a worthy feature, in and of itself), restore it to the factory defaults, or wipe the thing completely.
After downloading and installing on my XP machine(also available for Mac, Linux users may be able to run it in WINE), which took all of thirty seconds, I attached the Blackberry, and cranked it up. Then, I hit option 4 , let it transmit the instructions, and waited about 5 seconds. Once that was done, I removed the battery, and restarted. Unexpectedly, the device gave me a progress bar that was captioned wiping . I waited with baited breath, as the AT& T logo came up. It had indeed, reset the Blackberry to out of box presets. The desktop was there, and all was right with the world.
Now, there was just one more thing to do. The email accounts had to be reset for the device. I went through, deleted, and revalidated the existing email addresses for the device. Then, I went to Blackberry setup , and told it to activate the emails for the device. Now, it just works.
I would explain further, except Jl_Cmder works so well, I don’t have to. I should mention, that should you wipe the device entirely, instead of doing a reset, then you will have to use Blackberry Desktop Manager to reload the OS. Between the firmware and the desktop manager, it’s about an 180 MB download, so I suggest just doing a factory reset.
BlackBerries are part of our daily lives now, and when it locks up, it should be a cinch to get it back in working order. Hopefully this article has nudged you along that path. I have to check my email now, so I’ll be seeing you later. Bye.

What is the Best Online Backup?
If you have ever worked on a deadline, whether for school or work, you know the intense, disheartening feeling that spreads throughout your stomach whenever something goes wrong with the project.
Perhaps you deleted the wrong file, or your computer’s hard drive found the worst possible moment to crash. You suddenly have nothing left to show for all of your hard work and dedication. You have one hour to submit your project. Not fun.
Such unfortunate events are all too common, which is why it’s so important to use a backup device for your hard drive. A hard drive backup device can be pricey, so you may want to consider using an online backup service. Not that the device isn’t a great thing to have—it is—but it’s not going to protect your files from natural disasters or theft.
You probably already know the importance of backing up your files (or you wouldn’t be here), so you want to know about the best online backup. I’m going to show you the very best resource I have found for choosing an online backup, but first, I want to cover what it is that you should look for when comparing services.
First and foremost, the best online backup service will protect your sensitive information. Let’s say, for instance, that you want to back up all of the financial records from your Quicken software. Would you trust that information with any old fly by night internet service? Hope not! It’s imperative that a quality backup service use encryption to secure your files and protect your privacy.
Unless you want to spend your free time manually backing up your files, you should go with a service that automatically recognizes changes and backs them up.
You will need to back up large files manually, such as full programs, but a quality backup service will automatically back up your documents and photos. Some services allow you to choose a time for the program to run its backup service while others do so continuously.
Trust me on this one, gang. No one will ever remember or take the time to manually back stuff up. There’s always tomorrow to do it and you’ll find yourself saying that Nothing will happen today, it’s fine. I’m too busy and I’ll do it tomorrow. That’s the kiss of death.
Again, there is a great site for comparing differences in the best online backup services, so we’ll get to that in a minute. First I want to explain how it works so you can decide if it’s something you want to use on your computer.
The best online backups use a tiny software application to monitor the changes made within your files. Some programs mark your files with colorful icons so that you know which of your files have online backup. It should smoothly interact with your operating system so that you don’t experience a slowdown. In the event of an emergency, you can access your lost files within minutes.
Now that you know the advantages of an online backup service and how it works, we can move on to the most important information — where to find the best online backup service that meets your needs.
